CULTIVATE WOMEN WITH CHRIST

BY: MYA DASIA

S5 Ep.2 HEBREWS 1 | The Supremacy of Jesus an Expository/Exegetical study

  •  Prayer: May God help us to be those kinds of Christians and to be those kinds of churches who practice our faith in a way that is vibrant, committed, and unafraid. In Jesus Name Amen

  • Author: UNKNOWN - inspired by The Holy Spirit, 2nd generation christian d/t him receiving the message of Christ..

  • Recipients: Jewish members of the church

  • Location: Most likely during persecution under Neo AD 64-68

  • Date: Written before fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 BOOK ROOTED IN THE OT

  • Purpose: Encourage Jewish Christians to persevere for their faith who were in Rome who were tempted to shrink back from their Christian confession because of increasing persecution.

  • What is the eternal truth ? Jesus is the greatest in a series of spokespersons God sent and the great high priest who established the new covenant, rendering the old covenant. Jesus is the name above all names ( superiority, authority, kingship.. )

  • How do these eternal principles apply to life today and how do you fit into the eternal story? Christianity is not for the faint-hearted. It takes courage to be a follower of Christ. It takes courage to pick one’s cross and deny themselves and share in the suffering of Jesus Christ without wavering their faith. Hold fast to our confession in a culture that is increasingly hostile to our faith. As Jesus said, we need to enter the narrow gate, for broad is the way to destruction. Following Christ isn’t an aesthetic. It’s a life commitment.

  • Theme: Revelation of God in Christ (God’s Son)

  • Who is God in this passage? God is a father, God is also a son, God is superior, God is a creator, God is a voice, God is glorious, holy, etc

  • About: Hebrews has 29 quotes and 53 allusions to the OT

  • Hebrews is basically a book that exhorts discouraged Christians to continue on strong with Jesus in light of the complete superiority of who He is and what He did for us.

  • Essay/Letter format

  • The Book of Hebrews (for the most part) does not present Jesus speaking of Himself. There is a sense in which the Son does not speak in Hebrews; the Father speaks concerning the Son.

  • The book of Hebrews is God the Father telling us what God the Son is all about.

  •  “If men cannot learn about God from the Son, no amount of prophetic voices or actions would convince them. (John 12:50) Jesus continually acknowledges that He is from the God the father

VERSES 1-2a Jesus, the superior Savior

  • Jesus brought a revelation superior to the prophets of the old testament ( psalm 19:1-4) (romans 1:20)

  • The writer knew God exists and speaks to man

  • Revelation given to the prophets : parables, historical narrative, prophetic, poetry-like, dramatic

  • V.2 first mention of the readers (Jewish Christians)

  •  God speaks in various ways, Moses by a bush, Eliajh by a still small voice, etc.

  • Now God speaks to us through His son Jesus Christ. We no longer have to go to a priest but we can pray in Jesus name to communicate with God the father.

  • Jesus is our advocate. It shows that Jesus Christ was more than a prophet. He is the savior and Lord.

  • Jesus is the message from the father he revealed what no other prophet could. He is the personality of God

  • He is the last to come to bridge the gap between mankind and God for a unique relationship. God never gave up on His people; he uses countless ways to speak to us to save us.

  •  The prophets spoke to the fathers in various ways and God spoke to the prophets in various ways

“Deity is not to be explained, but to be adored; and the Sonship of Christ is to be accepted as a truth of revelation, to be apprehended by faith, though it cannot be comprehended by the understanding.” (Spurgeon)

  • VERSE (2B-3) : A sevenfold description of the glorious Son.

  • Jesus holds the “birthright” and is the heir of all the Father has (Hebrews 1:2).

  • Jesus is preeminent. Heir Of a person who receives something of value from the father.

  • All things Created through him. God has given Christ all of creation as a gift, because all was created for Him (Colossians 1:16; John 3:35). The inheritance that Christ receives includes believers, those whom the Father has given to the Son (John 6:37).Believers are co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17). Meaning, believers have been given the privilege of sharing Christ’s inheritance. As adopted sons of God, Christians are treated as firstborn heirs (Hebrews 12:23). Our inheritance includes salvation (Hebrews 1:14), eternal life (1 Peter 1:4), and even a measure of the throne of Christ (Revelation 3:21).

  • Brightness=Apaugasma (Greek)= radiance that shines from a source of light. Jesus represents God to us.

  • In this sense, Jesus is the “beam” of God’s glory. We have never seen the sun, only the rays of its light as they come to us. Even so, we have never seen God the Father, but we see Him through the “rays” of the Son of God

  • In His earthly ministry Jesus constantly demonstrated the power of His word. He could heal, forgive, cast out demons, calm nature’s fury all at the expression of one word. Here we see that His word is so powerful that it can uphold all things..

  • This is a position of majesty, of honor, of glory, and of finished work. This position of Jesus sets Him far above all creation.

  • Jesus is the atonement of our sins, he makes us right with God (purification)

VERSE 4-5 :Therefore, Jesus is so much better than the angels. The Scriptures prove Jesus is superior to the angels.Jesus is superior to the angels because He is the Son of God, as shown in Psalm 2:7 and 2 Samuel 7:14.

Superior of angels, · Christ the Heir. · Christ the Creator. · Christ the Revealer. · Christ the Sustainer. · Christ the Redeemer. · Christ the Ruler. · Christ Supreme.

  • There was a dangerous tendency to worship angels developing in the early Church (Colossians 2:18, Galatians 1:8), and Hebrews shows that Jesus is high above any angel. ·

  • There was the heretical idea that Jesus Himself was an angel, a concept that degrades His glory and majesty. ·

  • Understanding how Jesus is better than the angels helps us to understand how He is better than anyone or anything in our life.

  • God said things to His son that he never did to angels, He is the son of God and He’s perfect

  • Psalm 2:7 God’s son = relationship, love, care, special name that was not given to anyone but Jesus

VERSE 6-7 Jesus is superior to the angels because angels worship and serve Jesus, who is their God, as shown in Deuteronomy 32:43 (in the Septuagint and the Dead Sea Scrolls) and Psalm 104:4.

  • Psalm 104:4 the angels belongs to Jesus

  • Angels worship & serve Jesus who is their God (deut 32:43)

  • Angels worship and serve Jesus

Verse 8-12 ) Jesus is superior to the angels because the Father Himself calls Him (and not any angel) God and LORD (Yahweh), as shown in Psalm 45:6-7 and 102:25-27 from the Septuagint.

  • Psalm 45:6-7 deity of Jesus, Deity- concept of being a divine being/God

  • Jesus is called YAHWEH/GOD, self existent, never changing, always the same

  • This passage shows striking interaction between the Persons of the Trinity. “God, Your God” speaks of the Father and His position of authority over the Second Person of the Trinity. “You” refers to the Son. “Anointed” has in mind the ministry and presence of the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Trinity. Psalm 102:25-27 shows that the Son is not only called God, but also LORD (Yahweh). Then the Son is described with attributes and terms that belong only to God.

VERSE 13-14 Jesus is superior to the angels because He sat down, having completed His work, while the angels work on continually, as shown in Psalm 110:1.

  • Jesus completed His work, Hebrew author for the 7th time shows Jesus superiority over angels (psalm 110:1)

  • There’s a seat for Jesus because He has the right and the angels have no seat b/c their purpose is to serve God

  • At the invitation of God the father Jesus can sit at the right hand of God the father

  • The angels are not permitted to relax before God. They stand before the Father, but the Son sits down – because He isn’t a subject, He is the Sovereign.

  • Angels are ministering spirits, not governing spirits; service, not dominion is their calling.

  • In this respect angels are like a toy that won’t quit.

  • They keep working while the Son takes a posture of rest because He is the Son .Jesus is also called a servant and a minister, but this is part of His voluntary humiliation, not his essential nature – as it is in the essential nature of angels to be servants.. both Christ and Christians are described as heirs.

  • The angels are commanded to serve God, but He shares His servants with redeemed men and women.

  • This shows the great love of God for us, and how He wants to share all things with us.

  • YOU DON'T BOW DOWN TO WHAT’S INFERIOR TO YOU, JESUS IS SUPERIOR OVER THE ANGELS, MANKIND, DEMONS AND HE ULTIMATELY HAS THE AUTHORITY

  • JESUS IS THE FOUNDER AND PERFECTER OF OUR FAITH WHICH MEANS WHERE PEOPLE FIRST ENCOUNTER GOD AND KEEP ENCOUNTERING GOD IS THRU HIM

  • ULTIMATELY JESUS IS GREATER!

  • YOU’LL BE DOING YOURSELF A DISSERVICE TO WORSHIP ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE MOST HIGH (JESUS CHRIST)
