Introduction: Investing & The Typical Proverb
I'm sure you've heard of the proverb "the grass isn't always greener on the other side" which means that we tend to believe that other people are happier and leading a better life than us but in reality, this isn't the case because looks are deceiving. Then I'm sure you've heard of the other proverb "the grass is greener where you water it." which means that a person can work on their relationships, lifestyles, etc, and make it work.
Proverbs 31:30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
I'm going to talk about how the grass is greener where Jesus waters it which means Jesus can help us steward what we have, and invest in our work, purpose, relationships, passions, health, etc. This is not me saying we let God do all the work but we put in work and faith as well as he will take care of everything else (Matthew 6:33).
Invest means putting money, effort, time, etc. into something to make a profit or get an advantage. For example, you can invest your money by giving God your first fruits (Luke 6:38). You can invest your effort and time with God by reading your bible, attending church, stepping into purpose, etc. Investing in something requires work and it's usually beneficial but this isn't why you should do investing because God looks at our heart posture. For example, if you invest in your relationship with God the benefits are you'll be blessed beyond measure, you can pour into others, save souls, have the fruits of the spirit, etc. A relationship with God is the greatest investment you can make in this life.
It's important to invest in your health by visiting doctors, dentists, therapy etc. We do these investments automatically we should do the same for God investing in his kingdom. Often times we choose where we want to invest our time, money and effort into. Sometimes we invest ourselves into things that no longer serve us. Sis, be careful what you invest into, let God be your guide so you know what to invest into getting his insight and discernment. A lot of Christians don't believe in therapy but it's truly an investment in your mental health, I'm so excited I just started Christian therapy a week ago and it's already helping. Things can be our resource but God is our source keep reading as I'll go deeper into that.
Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Proverbs 13:11 Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.
Stewardship
Stewardship means utilizing and managing all resources God provides for the glory of God and of His creation. Including the gifts, God has given. As Christians, we are responsible for the financial blessings provided by God but also the spiritual gifts that are given through the Holy Spirit. God wants human beings to be His stewards in the work of creation, redemption, and sanctification. We are God's workmanship we are his mouthpiece. We're here for a purpose to steward what he's given us. The grass is truly greener where God waters it because without and apart from God we can do nothing. Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Joseph steward what God had given him and God made him a prosperous man. Joseph didn't have an easy life he was sold into slavery by his brothers who later begged for his forgiveness as they thought Joseph would get forgiveness instead Joseph said "Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:19–20). God blessed Joseph despite his suffering this is what being a good steward of God truly means it's not doing it when it benefits you but doing it when it hurts. The reality is life will have troubles but God uses them for our good to reflect his kingdom and glory. You can be a good steward by showing forgiveness to those who've hurt you, taking care of the car God gave you, and giving back to your community it's so many examples the list goes on. Ruth was also a good steward she and Naomi faced difficult times but yet they still stewarded what God gave them. Ruth stewarded her relationship with Naomi she never left her side. Ruth 1:16 "But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God". Sis, are you managing what God has given you by being faithful in little? Whatever you do glorify God and steward what he's given you. God loves faith. Colossians 3:23
Bible Verses of Stewardship:
Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
Matthew 25:14-30 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. ...
Titus 1:7 For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,
1 Timothy 6:17-19 As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
Luke 16:10 “One who is faithful in a very little is also faithful in much, and one who is dishonest in a very little is also dishonest in much.
Luke 16:1-13 He also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions. And he called him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Turn in the account of your management, for you can no longer be manager.’ And the manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do, since my master is taking the management away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’ So, summoning his master's debtors one by one, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ ...
Luke 12:48 But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more.
Matthew 25:21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’
Source .Vs. Resource
A source is a place something comes from or starts at or the cause of something. Jesus is the source of living water that will never thirst again. God is our firm foundation and he'll never fail us. A resource on the other hand is a supply or support typically money, services, materials, etc. God should never be your resource he should always be the source.
The resources he's given us are our jobs, cars, homes, money, church, relationships, etc. These things should add and be fruitful in our lives as God intended but they cannot be fruitful if they become the source. The source always takes care of the resource. If God is our source then our resources cannot be our source as they will only draw us away from Christ. In other simpler terms,, the blessing cannot become your God, it cannot be an idol. God should be able to give us things to enjoy so we can steward them without us idolizing them.
Don't pick his presents over his presence.
John 4:10-15- Jesus and The Samaritan Woman
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.” 11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
Jesus is the true living water nothing on this earth will satisfy us but Him the true source the true king the true way and the true life.
Is the grass greener on the other side? No, it never is. Be content with what you have and stop comparing your life to others including other Christians. Hebrews 13:5 "Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Is the grass greener where we water it? Again, no because we can't do anything by our own strength it's our human nature to be weak and to make mistakes. Matthew 26:41 "Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Is the grass greener where Jesus waters it? Yes, it will always be greener if Jesus is the one watering it because we put our hope in him, we have been a new creation, he's strength and provider and the source and foundation of all things. Philippians 4:19 "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
